This year, unlike most years, I stayed in Edmonton over the holiday season. We've been having record mild temperatures, so of course I went for a walk. There weren't many things to take pictures of, given the lack of snow, but here are a few that I did take.
Here is a sequence of shots showing some of the early ice on the river. This is nowhere near enough to walk on - it is mostly just loose chunks of slush and ice squished together. A big surge of water from the dam upstream would clear it out in a few minutes. They did that sort of thing a lot last year, and left six foot heaps of ice on the banks, as well as damaging the riverboat!
The squirrels usually don't hibernate all winter - they can be seen on the warmer days. This year, I wonder if they've gone to sleep at all! |
Here is a pair of shots of the river ice, taken from a couple hundred yards downstream from the first sequence.
Hope you all had a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
